Imran William has been with VodafoneZiggo since 2010. While studying, he worked as a part-time sales assistant at our shop in Rotterdam. Now, he fulfils the role of Recruiter. An inspiring journey. His secret to success? "The right mindset and maximum effort."
As Recruiter, Imran is responsible for the Telesales and Customer Retention positions within the company. "I make sure we hire the right people. People with the skills and motivation that coincide with the culture at VodafoneZiggo. I also ensure that everybody is on the same wavelength in terms of expectations. To get these things done, I work together closely with several different teams within, and outside of HR on a daily basis. Because when we’ve hired the right colleague, we want them to stay."
Imran launched his career at VodafoneZiggo when he was 21. "I started as a part-time Sales Assistant, as I was still studying. I always worked at weekends. My team was fantastic and I quickly felt responsible for the shop," he recalls. His natural leadership qualities gained the upper hand. "I was given the opportunity to develop my management skills, which helped me grow in my role."
When he’d completed his bachelor’s Tourism Management, Imran decided to start working full time for his favourite employer: VodafoneZiggo. "I joined a training scheme to become Floor Lead and within just 12 months I was running our shop in Delft." During the six years that followed, Imran became Manager of several Vodafone and Ziggo shops, with more and bigger branches being put in his charge. "On top of that, I took part in all kinds of projects. I was involved in product launches, was on the feedback group and taught staff courses. If another project came along that I could handle, I took it."
In 2021, Imran was asked to take responsibility for recruitment for all the shops, and so he moved from the shop floor into the office. "I’d often visited Central Office in Utrecht and always felt at home there. Moreover, the shop is right beneath it, so I was very close to my familiar environment. And whether I’m at the office or in the shop: the working atmosphere is just as positive and open. You can really be yourself." Imran smiles: "And that’s saying something, coming from a Rotterdam Ajax fan with a poor sense of humour!"
Imran is happy with VodafoneZiggo, and VodafoneZiggo is happy with Imran. "My shop experience benefits me every day. I understand the skills that people need in order to be able to do the job properly." What he learned in the shop, he still uses in his work today. "Here, too, I’m customer focused, I work in a team and I communicate in a clear manner. The fact that I can do these things, is all down to my work in the shop."
"I have VodafoneZiggo to thank for my career development. Yes, I did it myself. But my managers gave me the confidence to take the opportunities that came my way. I had the freedom to do things my way, as long as I delivered results. This allowed me to join several projects and training programs. I got to connect with different departments and meet some great people. I was given every chance to explore and really get to know the organisation from within."
A large organisation demands a proactive attitude. Imran has some tips in conclusion: "Be sure to have a plan for personal growth and be inquisitive. Managers and recruiters are perfectly willing to help you along, but you do have to tell them where you want to go. And what you’re willing to do to get there. A course, for instance. Or two, or three courses. There are so many to choose from here. And don’t forget, your development never stops. Ask for feedback and challenge yourself. I, too, keep learning. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, but I keep looking ahead to the future. No limits!"
